"Really? I will never understand human religion. And I'm a saint
in one. Sailors' wives left offerings for me and asked me to see their
husbands home safe."
She shakes her head, tone shifting from bewildered to sympathetic as she
gets back to the main topic. "I've been there. I hadn't, either, until a
breach. With Taylor, actually, long before she and I became what we are
now. It was awful coming back to myself after. It forced me to see
that I'd been in love with someone once before, without recognizing it for
what it was. And that person, who I loved most in the world, betrayed me
and tried to leave me for dead. I had lost more than I realized."
He tried not to act shocked but well-he at least managed to keep his jaw from dropping. Ulla. A Saint. A saint.
He could almost feel a headache forming on his temples. Almost.
"I..well. It can be complicated to explain. But I am...truly sorry for what you lost. I..."
He shook his head. "I can only hope and pray you will continue to have your love and happiness with Miss Taylor. If she is anything like she was in breach...she's a wonderful woman."
"For the rest of her life," Ulla agrees softly. She'll live centuries
unless she's killed, so she expects to outlive her wife. But that's no
reason not to appreciate the time she has. "She is
wonderful. You should get to know her some here, too. She won't be upset
with you either."
Oh...oh. She must live so long. It wasn't anything he would wish on anyone, but too- no one lived the same amount of time.
They only had their time, today.
"I see. Though, admittedly- I am a little embarrassed." Mortified really, but Ulla didn't need to know that.
"But- I would like to. I think I need to...be kind with myself a little. Realize that this breach doesn't mean I have broken my vows. Or will develop ...anything romantic here."
Thinking about it, he might have to figure out how to talk to Norton, since he'd been...interested before.
"Would you blame anyone else for things they did in another life, with
different memories? You don't seem the sort who would. So show
yourself the same kindness you'd offer anyone else." Easier said than
done, but she feels it's only reasonable.

"I'll try my best. Thank you Ulla. For your kindness and understanding."
